Portrait photography

Here's a few shots from a recent portrait shoot with Jon. He contacted me to ask if I could help and thought why not explain a little for other future clients about what's involved in getting a portrait shoot.

First off, why not ask the question, 'why do you need a portrait shoot?' Whatever the need for the photograph of yourself, it can simply be just a great way to record who you are and what you look like right now. Something to have and look at fondly in the future or to send on to your gran for her mantlepiece.
Alternatively you could be looking at getting a more corporate type of shoot. A great way to put yourself out there with confident and professionally taken shots. I'm not a huge fan of the typical corporate style shoot with white backgrounds etc. I much prefer a more organic mood and look. I think it shows a lot more personality too. If it's more of a corporate photo then as long as you look smart, come across confident and professional then it doesn't have to be too stuffy and cold in appearance. A relaxed friendly portrait may help say more about you, helping you get the role you want.

The process on the day when we meet pretty much should be already in the bag. We will have spoken on the phone before the shoot addressing all the needs you require so when we get together there is a firm approach in our minds. The shoot will be fun as well as productive. I aim to make sure you get the shots you want and ones I'm proud to put on my website. No stress at all throughout the whole process. For me the best way to put someone at ease who's not used to having their photograph taken is just by talking together. Spending time finding out a little about each other with normal conversation. You can tell me your likes and dislikes and put the world to right as we capture the images. Naturally then your personality will shine through in the photographs.

If you are heading for a more professional look to the shoot, then of course what you wear is important. I am always happy to have a video call where you hold up your clothes to the camera and we choose what works best for the day. I'll advise you on posture, your mood for the shots (friendly/strong/approachable... whatever etc). Location is also very important. Maybe you sell surfboards? Standing in front of an office block hardly fits the bill and same for those who want the head desk in a corporate company. We won't be taking the shots on a park bench. It's all common sense I guess but my experience will guide the process from start to finish giving you a large stack of images you can take away you'll be proud of.

Simple tips before the shoot - try to get a good night's sleep the night before. Strictly no raving. Looking tired is hard to photoshop out. Really, I can't help you with that! Make sure your clothing is exactly how it needs to look - tidy/smart/appropriate and ironed.

Other than that, remember a shoot is something you are paying for so just enjoy the experience. If need be, make-up artists can be used, whatever your needs. The shots are yours and you need to be happy with the end results. I'm happy to say, I've not had any disappointments yet.

Give me a call and let's see what we can do together to create some great portrait photography!
